A very calming and nicely composed watercolour of fishing vessels at anchor, drying their sails. Signed AD Bell lower left and dated 1953. AD Bell was the pseudonym of Wilfrid Knox (1884-1966). Wilfrid Knox was a British artist, born in Handsworth Birmingham. He was an engineer serving in the Royal Flying Corps in WW1 but later became an artist, working in both watercolour and oil and famous for his portrayals of the last days of sail. He used the pseudonym "AD Bell" for most of these pictures, which he marketed through an agent in Birmingham. He also painted images of Venice and WW1 fighting aircraft.
