Wick Antiques Ltd

Wick Antiques was established by Charles Wallrock in the early 1980s. Having grown up in the Antiques world Charles developed an extensive wealth of knowledge. Starting out as a ‘man with a van’ he quickly gained a good reputation and embarked on a longstanding relationship with Harrods. He was later joined by his wife, Caroline Wallrock. Caroline having completed a Persian degree, went on to study at Christie’s fine art and then joined Sotheby’s specializing in Islamic and Japanese works of art, as well as taking the occasional auction. Together they make a formidable team with extensive knowledge and buy and sell some of the best items on the market.

Description
A Fine Art Deco Period Marquetry and Parquetry Jewellery Casket, Probably French c.1920
This fine jewellery box is of casket form, the interior containing a series of lift-out trays designed to hold and organise all forms of jewellery for the lady of means. The exterior of the box is a wonderful example of marquetry and parquetry inlay being combined in a single object. The box is veneered in a patchwork of contrasting squares and diamonds of veneer, creating a strong geometric aesthetic as associated with the Deco period. The central diamond on the front of the casket contains a fine marquetry picture of a church or cathedral, stained sycamore and other woods being used to create a sense of colour and depth. Although it has not been possible to identify the building, it has similarities with many great gothic edifices in France and Belgium such as Saint-Ouens Abbey. The veneers on the box are laid at angles and are enhanced further with the use of squares of mother of pearl. The lid of the piece has inlaid floral rosettes and arrow/chevron designs which also incorporate stained green timber. It is possible that this decoration was specially commissioned and certainly the piece overall has the feel of a bespoke design rather than a repeated model made for stock.
The quality of the cabinetwork and the veneering and decoration all point to this piece having been made in a leading workshop of the period, quite probably in Paris where the style originated. It is an exceptional example of a luxury object from the early 20th century and just as desirable today as when it was first made over 100 years ago.
