Description
A Fine George II Style Walnut Wing Chair With Carved Hairy Paw Feet, Upholstered in Burgundy Leather. English, c.1920 This fine wingchair has been newly upholstered in antiqued burgundy leather with a buttoned back in the “Chesterfield” style and with gilt nailing to the arms. The chair stands upon four walnut legs, the front legs beautifully carved with shell knees and exceptional hairy paw feet. The chair deep and tall in its proportions, making it particularly sculptural in form and also ideal for use in a large hallway as a porter’s chair. The present chair is inspired by a series of models produced in the George II period by a number of chair makers. For a settee with similar legs, made c.1740-50, see the example made for the important Yorke family of Lanhydrock and Wimpole Hall, which can be seen on the National Trust collections site here https://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/882804 The quality of the present chair suggests that it could have been made by a firm such as Gillows. It was certainly made by a highly competent maker and the carving is of excellent quality.
