Before Mahogany appeared, Walnut was always reserved for the best quality chairs. This was because it carves better than oak chairs and leaves a smooth finish and more pleasing graining. While England reduced its overall use of Walnut from the late 18th Century onwards, in Northern Europe it would remain the most popular material all the way through to the mid 20th Century. Due to the warmer softer tone Walnut chairs are good at looking light and elegant compared to Oak or Beech. A Walnut Bergere chair or Walnut dining chair can be a thing of beauty. Because Walnut has long been admired as a craft wood, it underwent a revival during the 20th Century. Its tone often suited the revivalist 18th Century designs, as well as more modern forms as well.
