A Fine Late Period Walter Sickert Painting, The Coffee Mill, Which is Entirely Fresh to the Market Having Never Before Been Offered for Sale Provenance Given by the artist to his student Florence Rowley Bristow (nee White) and then by family descent until acquired by us Exhibition History 1938 Sickert solo show at The Leicester Galleries in March 1938, May, the British Empire Exhibition, Glasgow 1942 Temple Newsam Sickert Exhibition 1981-1982 Late Sickert exhibition held by the Arts Council at the Hayward Gallery The painting is mentioned in various newspaper reports, all from 1938. In the Western Mail, 5th of March 1938, the painting is described as follows: ‘In a collection of gems the outstanding works are “Broadstairs”, a poem of colour in soft greens and violet, “Home Life” and “Coffee Mill” two superb paintings of interior scenes’. The Western Morning News, 12th of march 1938, described the painting in more detail: ‘”The Coffee Mill”, which is a charming study of a kitchen interior, painted so as to show its decorative qualities’. Then when the painting was loaned to the British Empire Exhibition in Glasgow later that same year, the piece was mentioned in a review of the exhibition in The Times, 2nd of May 1938 (simply listed by name with no additional commentary). The Dundee Courier, 3rd of May 1938, also mentions the piece in a brief review of the art works on display in the Palace of Arts pavilion. The piece also featured in two additional exhibitions in 1942 at Temple Newsam and in 1981-82 at the Hayward Gallery, held in conjunction with the Arts Council.
