Oil painting was first adopted in the West during the 15th Century. Since the start oils quickly rose to become the most respected among all the different methods because the paint dries very slowly giving the artist plenty of time to create the look they desire. However, just because Oil Paintings dry slowly does mean they need to appear dull and lifeless and for centuries people have been creating amazing and engaging works that prove this. Whether you are into grand Old Masters, subtle impressionistic landscapes or bizarre abstractions, there are a wealth of antique and vintage Oil Paintings out there. They are great because they can add a sense of instant atmosphere to any space, so 19th Century landscapes or Portraits can add a timelessness, while bright and textured works from the 20th Century will add interest and colour.
While art historians and critics will place a great deal of attention on the artist as the most important element, even unknown paintings deserve their due and space on your wall.
