Description
🇬🇧 Adrian Heath (c.1965) – Signed Abstract Watercolour "Form in Motion" A rare and captivating signed original by a key figure in post-war British abstraction. 🎨 Artwork Overview: Title: Form in Motion Artist: Adrian Heath (1920–1992) Date: Circa 1965 Medium: Watercolour on paper Signature: Signed and dated “Heath ‘65” lower right An exceptional abstract composition by British modernist Adrian Heath, Form in Motion exemplifies the artist’s mature period, where structural precision meets expressive freedom. Rendered in watercolour, this original piece showcases Heath’s mastery of line, colour, and spatial rhythm. 🖌️ Composition & Palette: Heath’s composition is an interplay of verticals, diagonals, and angular forms, creating a striking sense of movement and visual tension. His use of watercolour is both refined and dynamic: Ochres & Siennas ground the work with warm earth tones. Slate Blues & Steel Greys offer a cool, contemplative contrast. Charcoal Blacks provide depth and weight. Ivories & Creams lend softness and atmosphere. Heath’s technique combines: Transparent washes for luminosity and layering Dry-brush textures for edge and clarity Gestural strokes that energise the surface Though abstract, the composition evokes suggestions of architecture, human forms, or kinetic energy—hallmarks of Heath’s style rooted in Constructivism and European abstraction. 🧠 About the Artist – Adrian Heath: Born in Burma in 1920, Heath trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. During WWII, he was a POW at Stalag Luft III, where he famously encouraged fellow prisoner Terry Frost to pursue art. A leading figure in British abstraction, Heath was deeply influenced by Constructivist principles, blending geometric structure with lyrical expression. By the 1950s, he had moved fully into abstraction, using colour and form to explore rhythm, space, and movement. Key Milestones: Exhibited at the Redfern Gallery from the 1950s onward Participated in the 1951 Festival of Britain Authored Abstract Art: Its Origins and Meaning (1953) Included in Documenta II (1959), ICA, Tate, and This is Tomorrow (1956) His works remain in major public collections, including the Tate, British Council, and Arts Council Collection. 🖼️ Presentation: Professionally framed in a modern, natural wood frame with float mounting to highlight the work’s visual impact. Ready to hang. 📜 Provenance: Private UK Collection Acquired via reputable Scottish auction house Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant Ltd Previously exhibited in a museum setting ✅ Why Collect This Piece: Original Signed Watercolour from Heath’s key mature period (c.1965) Exemplary British Abstract Art with rich provenance and exhibition history Evocative Composition bridging structure and emotion Professionally Framed & Presented — ready for display Museum-Quality Investment in post-war modernist British art
