Alfred Walter Bayes (1831-1909) Large Victorian Oil Painting in Giltwood Frame

This is a large and superb 19th-century oil on canvas painting by the accomplished Victorian artist Alfred Walter Bayes (1831–1909), depicting a wonderfully characterful rural genre scene with figures and donkeys. The composition portrays two young women in traditional dress conversing with an elderly countryman, accompanied by two laden donkeys upon a country lane. A low stone wall and richly painted woodland form the backdrop, giving the work considerable depth and atmosphere. Bayes has handled the figures particularly well, with considerable attention paid to their facial expressions, costume and individual character. The donkeys are equally appealing, while the restrained, earthy palette is enlivened by the colourful shawl and clothing worn by the figures. The painting is signed lower right and is presented within an exceptionally decorative and substantial period carved giltwood-and-gesso frame, with pierced architectural ornament and scrolling foliate and floral decoration. The frame is particularly impressive and complements the painting beautifully.
