This is an antique knife box. An English, mahogany 46 item cutlery storage canteen, dating to the Georgian period, circa 1800. Superb craftsmanship with beautiful figuring and useful proportion that displays a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout. Select stocks present warm caramel hues and fine grain interest. Boxwood stringing decorates the interior with a lighter caramel colour. Dressed with a brass drop handle over a matching lock escutcheon — untested, key absent. It is of distinctive shield form, the canted lid opens smoothly on oval shaped hinges. Arranged as a canteen of 46 individual pieces, with two being of sharpener shape. Base dressed with a green baize cushion to provide protection for surfaces. This is a delightful antique knife box, with the original, quality fitted interior.
