A fine 19th Century (c.1830) English antique tilt-top wine table, the circular top in solid mahogany with a neatly raised dished edge, supported on a turned beech column and mahogany tripod base with small turned bun feet. The pedestal column displays skilled hand turning with a subtle taper, the whole finished in a warm, even polish that unites the contrasting timbers harmoniously.
The choice of beech for the turned pedestal is correct to the period and characteristic of quality Regency construction. Beech offered superior strength and a crisp turning surface, then stained to match the mahogany top and base, a combination frequently used in London and provincial workshops of the 1820s and 1830s.
Elegant and practical in scale, ideal as an occasional table beside an armchair, sofa or reading spot, retaining the lightness and poise characteristic of the era.
Presented in very good antique condition with a rich, well-developed patina and minor surface wear consistent with age. The tilt mechanism operates smoothly; the brass catch is a later 19th-century replacement. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
