Since it was first introduced into Europe in the mid 18th Century through to the recent past, Mahogany remained a firm favourite for table construction. Not only does the beautiful grain really come alive once polished, but it cuts and carves well also. This carving would be less intricate than Walnut or fruitwoods because of potential chipping, but would still give the tables a unique character we prize today. During the Georgian and Victorian Eras Mahogany tables went from having very fine spindly legs (often with boxwood inlay details) to bulbous curvaceous legs carved with geometric forms and fluted columns.
