A superb antique Victorian carved walnut salon suite of elegant form and excellent quality dating to the mid 19th century. This is a complete and beautifully matched drawing room suite comprising a sofa, a gentleman's armchair, a lady's armchair, six side chairs and a pair of footstools, an increasingly scarce find in such a cohesive set. The frames are finely carved in solid walnut with well defined cresting shaped balloon backs and flowing cabriole legs. The sofa is particularly striking with its triple back and sweeping arms designed to create a graceful centrepiece within a formal interior. The armchairs follow the same refined lines with the gentleman’s chair offering a broader more generous seat while the lady’s chair is slightly more delicate in proportion. The six side chairs complete the suite all maintaining consistent design and craftsmanship throughout. This type of suite was made for the Victorian drawing room, a formal space used for receiving guests and social occasions rather than everyday use. The intention was to create a coordinated and elegant setting and suites such as this would have been a statement of taste and status within the home.
