Description
This is good hand wrought sterling silver spoon, made by the well known Cotswold based Guild of Handicraft. The piece carries full U.K. hallmarks for London 1936, along with the Guild’s usual ‘GofH’ sponsors mark. This is an unusual design for the guild, with the stylised chased decoration to the terminal, along with some simple dot punch marks. As a testament to the handmade nature of the spoon, you can faintly see the spot hammer marks left there deliberately by the craftsman who manufactured it - this is particularly evident on the reverse side of the terminal. The reverse of the bowl feature a kind of double rat tail, with this allowing the stem to join the bowl, which again is unusual to see on a Guild spoon. The exact craftsman that made the spoon is uncertain, but it may be a Harry Warmington (William Henry Warmington) piece. The condition is good, but of course there are normal signs of age and use, with light contact marks to the silver. The silver has a good colour and patina, and is free from damage or repairs. All in all, a good scarce design by a highly collected maker.
measurements
The spoon measures 16cm in length, and is 3.6cm wide across the bowl. The weight is 39g.
