Description
This a good quality tea caddy spoon by one of Britains leading arts & crafts designers and silversmiths, Albert Edward Jones. Although not marked in any way, there’s no mistaking the shape and classic A.E.Jones rosette to the handle. Jones was a prolific maker of silver, silver plated and mixed metal items, and he also made pieces for Connell of Cheapside. Finding a caddy spoon in silver plate by Jones is actually a lot more difficult than finding a solid silver version, and would seem to be scarce. The whole piece has an all over hammered finish, with the bowl being of stylised heart shaped form. The cut cornered handle has an applied rosette, the type of which can be found on other Jones pieces. As mentioned above, completely devoid of any markings whatsoever, but the attribution is certain. I can’t be certain what the base metal is, as Jones work in copper and brass (as well as silver of course), but it think it’s likely to be copper. Having studied other similar Jones pieces, it will date to circa 1920. The condition is excellent, with no real faults to report. The plated finish a good and shows very little wear. As possibly noticed in the images, there is what appears to be a tiny black dot to the inside the bowl, but this is merely a slight ‘pit’ or ‘pockmark’ to the surface.
