Description
🌟 Antique Arts & Crafts Hand-Carved School Crest Plaque, 1919–1920
Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School, Lancashire, England
🏰 A Unique Century-Old Work of British Heritage
This hand-carved wooden wall plaque bears the crest of Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School (Lancashire, England), crafted over 100 years ago by a talented student of the school. Far from being a reproduction, this is a one-of-a-kind artifact — created by hand, rich in symbolism, and firmly rooted in the traditions of English education and ecclesiastical history.
📜 Historic School with Royal Foundations
Founded in 1566 under Queen Elizabeth I’s charter, Rivington Grammar School was established by Bishop James Pilkington, reformer and Bishop of Durham. Its crest reflects both Pilkington family arms and the See of Durham, underscoring the school’s long-standing ties to the Church of England.
The mitre (bishop’s headdress) – symbolizes spiritual authority and foundation in faith.
The star – represents enlightenment through scholarship and guidance.
RBGS initials – proudly signify the school’s enduring identity.
✍️ Crafted by a Student, 1919–1920
The plaque was carved between 1919–1920 by Herbert Robert Southworth, aged 14, while a pupil at the school. His name, age, and the date are inscribed on the reverse, together with a later provenance label confirming its authenticity and ownership.
This makes the piece both an art object and a document of its own creation — history literally carved into wood by a young artisan a century ago.
