Description
A fabulous Balinese carving of a deity surrounded by a lotus halo, with another evil looking figure below, biting at the halo! There are also numerous flowers and seed pods below this drama. The deity is probably Vishnu, sitting serenely on a lotus throne, while an underworld demon, with bulging eyes and horns, gnaws at the lotus, representing the constant struggle between good and evil. The dense display of flowers and seed heads below represent the primordial jungle from which the demon arises, whereas the lotus flower has broken out of this jungle, representing spiritual awakening. The style and wear of the frame suggests a 1970s date.

Excellent. No visible chips. Presented in a wooden frame with gilt edging and mottled paint resembling tortoiseshell, set off with a pinky brown board. A few water marks to the board. Signs of wear to gilding.
