Description
This is a striking painting with a great composition by the Modern British artist Rudolph Ihlee 1883 - 1968, The painting is titled Boats in dry dock possibly in Denia, The painting as a New England Art club label to the back and is signed and dated 1966. The painting is executed in oils on board and measures 30x24 inches and comes in a simple frame. To be honest I would replace the frame. It is in excellent condition and a great piece of Modern British Art. Rudolph Ihlee was a well known landscape and figure painter in oil. Born in London, he studied art at the Slade School 1906-10. He exhibited with the New English Art Club from 1910, becoming a member in 1919, and also showed at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1912 and at the Royal Society of British Artists. In March 1921 an exhibition of his paintings and drawings was held at The Leicester Galleries in London. Later that year he painted in Brittany and then settled at Collioure on the French Mediterranean coast, close to the border with Spain, where he lived for many years. During the 1920s he also painted in Spain and Algeria. Ihlee later returned to England and had his home at West Deeping, near Peterborough. His work is held in a number of public collections, including the Government Art Collection, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Manchester City Art Gallery, York Museums Trust, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery Bedford, and the University of Hull. In 1978 retrospective exhibitions were held at the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield and at the Belgrave Gallery in London.
