Description
This Victorian-era hall stand is a refined example of the ornamental cast iron work popularized by the Coalbrookdale Company, featuring high-Victorian naturalistic and sporting themes. The design is characterized by an arched backplate adorned with scrolling foliage and intricate relief medallions depicting the heads of a fox and a hare, symbols typical of the country house "hunting scene" aesthetic. Functional elements include a central marble-topped demi-lune shelf and a semi-circular stick rail above a pierced foliate base designed to hold umbrellas and walking sticks. Significantly, the presence of a Victorian registration lozenge (or kite mark) on the reverse serves as a critical mark of authenticity and dating; used between 1842 and 1883, this diamond-shaped stamp encodes the specific day, month, and year the design.
In good condition, with the exception of one historic break and repair, strengthened from the rear (see images). This item is very heavy.
