Coastal Castle by Colin Hunter (1841-1904) Oil Painting

This is an oil painting of a Scottish castle on the coast by Colin Hunter Ara, Rsw. Signed on the lower right. Colin Hunter, the hugely successful Scottish Victorian seascape painter began his career as a landscape painter. In the 1860s his reputation for seascapes became established. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and worked in Edinburgh for some years. His works are currently exhibited in many museums around the world, including the London Tate and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. This seascape captures the power and drama of the sea which was Colin Hunter's particular skill. Looking at the painting one can almost hear the cacophany of gulls above the sound of the crashing waves. In the distance are sailing boats. Anyone familiar with the Scottish coast will instantly appreciate this evocative seascape.
