Description
A superb collection of original Second World War RAF and RCAF Mk.VIII flying goggles, comprising five pairs and associated period accessories, including an exceptionally well-preserved boxed example.
Dating from the Second World War, the Mk.VIII is one of the most recognisable patterns of British flying goggles and was extensively associated with RAF aircrew during the conflict.
This carefully assembled collection provides an excellent opportunity to acquire several examples together, illustrating variations in condition, lenses, straps and surviving equipment.
The Goggles came from a private collection.
The collection comprises:
1. RCAF MK.VIII FLYING GOGGLES
An original pair of Royal Canadian Air Force Mk.VIII flying goggles, formerly belonging to Sgt Eric Martin, 13 EFTS, Royal Canadian Air Force, together with a strap.
An especially interesting pair due to the named RCAF association.
2. RAF MK.VIII FLYING GOGGLES
An original pair of Second World War RAF Mk.VIII flying goggles retaining their characteristic blue-grey painted metal frames, leather surrounds and lenses.
3 & 4. TWO RAF MK.VIII FLYING GOGGLES
Two further original pairs of RAF Mk.VIII flying goggles, both retaining their leather face cushions, lenses and blue-grey painted frames.
One has a replacement/non-period strap fitted.
An original card issue box accompany these goggles.
5. BOXED RAF MK.VIII FLYING GOGGLES
The highlight of the collection is a particularly fine pair of original RAF Mk.VIII flying goggles preserved within their original issue box.
The goggles retain an impressive amount of their original blue-grey paint to the brass frames, together with clear lenses, leather surrounds and chamois leather face cushion.
Importantly, the original elasticated head strap remains in place with its adjustment buckle and leather tabs.
The original box is marked:
“GOGGLES Mk.VIII”
and carries the Air Ministry crown and AM marking.
Also accompanying this pair are spare lenses and the original plastic “22C/1875 OUTFIT ANTI-MIST” container.
The survival of the original box and associated accessories makes this a particularly attractive example for the specialist RAF or aviation collector.
