Early 19th C. Portrait Of A Gentleman, Antique Oil Painting,
Strong, sober early 19th Century oil on canvas portrait, very much in the late Georgian/ Regency tradition.
Canvas 63.5cm by 52cm
Frame 70.5cm by 59.5cm
The painting depicts a gentleman shown half length, turned slightly to his left but engaging the viewer directly with a calm, self-assured expression. He wears a dark coat likely black or very deep green paired with a high white stock or cravat, a combination typical of circa 1800–1820.
His powdered or naturally white hair, worn full and softly waved rather than tightly queued, further supports an early 19th-century date.
The artist has favoured restraint and dignity over embellishment. The background is a plain, muted dark ground, allowing the sitter’s face to emerge clearly, with careful attention paid to the modelling of the flesh tones, particularly the warm pinks of the cheeks and nose contrasted against the cool greys of the hair. The brushwork is controlled and economical, especially in the face, while the coat is rendered more broadly, a common academic convention of the period.
× The canvas shows major restoration, with repaired ripped canvas and filled patches where the paint was missing.
Portrait is housed in a later gilt frame, which complements the portrait without distracting from it.
Overall, this is a respectable, well-observed period portrait, likely commissioned to convey status, sobriety, and moral character, rather than flamboyance, very much in keeping with the values of the early 1800s. A solid example of British or Northern European portraiture from the era, with strong decorative and historical presence.
