This oil painting on Schmincke board by Rudolf Kreher, dated 1939, depicts a dramatic alpine landscape centred on a small stone wayside shrine or roadside chapel, a motif commonly found in mountainous regions of Central Europe.
The shrine stands beside a winding path, framed by bare trees and dark foliage, with rugged, angular mountain peaks rising sharply in the background beneath a heavy, clouded sky.
Kreher employs a subtle, restrained palette of slate blues, greys, ochres and earthy browns, applied with confident, textured brushwork that gives the surface a lively, tactile quality.
The contrast between the solid, man-made shrine and the vast, imposing natural landscape creates a strong sense of scale and quiet contemplation, evoking both spiritual reflection and rural solitude.
The painting is signed and dated lower right “Rudolf Kreher 1939”, in good condition showing dusting and is executed on a Schmincke board, well known arts supplier. Board is presented in a silver-painted wooden frame, likely later period, showing wear and tear with imperfections.
Overall, this is a characterful interwar European landscape painting, combining traditional alpine subject matter with expressive painterly handling.
Board is 35cm by 27cm
Frame 40.5cm by 32.5cm
