Description
Early Georgian oak longcase clock, signed Budgen Croydon (This is probably Thomas Budgen who was working at Croydon circa 1735-1737. George II period). There were also clocks signed in error as Budgen Croydon. Many Engravers were Dutch and so with the language differences, errors regularly crept in. From 1750-1824 there was also a William Budgen and from 1838-2851 there was a John Bugden of Croydon, who were presumably related to Thomas.
The case of golden oak is good, sound and stable. long full length trunk door with shaped surround edging and attractive patination.

The 8 day movement strikes the number of hours on the o'clock & has a working strike / silent dial. the brass dial additionally has a seconds dial, working date date window & gilt spandrels of rare design.

We acquired this clock privately. The owner had inherited it from his Great Aunt. She lived Near Croydon and had owned it for "A considerable length of time or possibly had also inherited it.
