Description
Edward Horace Thompson – Thirlmere & Helvellyn, Lake District - Original Watercolour 1925 Subject & Medium An original watercolour landscape by Edward Horace Thompson (1879–1949), capturing the calm expanse of Thirlmere reservoir with the dramatic rise of Helvellyn beyond. Executed on paper in 1925, the work is protected beneath glass, preserving its delicate tones and sensitive brushwork. Composition & Technique Thompson’s skill lies in his ability to combine accuracy of place with atmosphere. The shimmering surface of the water is rendered with subtle highlights, contrasted against darker passages that suggest depth and movement. In the foreground, fresh grasses, purple heather, and a single upright tree create structure and lead the eye into the composition. Beyond, the slopes rise gradually into mist-shrouded peaks, their western flank bathed in warm golden light. Overhead, shifting cloud formations break to reveal glimpses of blue sky. The restrained yet effective palette of greens, browns, purples, greys, and blues creates a harmonious, evocative scene. Signature - Signed in the lower corner by the artist, confirming authenticity and adding value as a collectible British landscape painting. The Artist:- Edward Horace Thompson was born in Seaton, Cumbria, in 1879 and went on to establish himself as one of the Lake District’s most admired painters. Initially employed in a factory office, he later pursued art full-time, opening a studio in Cockermouth. His watercolours, celebrated for their precision and atmosphere, are held in private collections across the world. Thompson exhibited at Gladstone & Patterson and his works have been offered by leading auction houses, achieving prices of up to $4,605 USD. His reputation endures as a significant figure in early 20th-century British landscape art. Thirlmere & Helvellyn:- Helvellyn: The third-highest mountain in England, renowned for its dramatic ridges, including Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. Its striking profile and literary associations with Wordsworth and Coleridge secure its place as one of the country’s most celebrated peaks. Thirlmere: Once a natural lake, transformed into a reservoir in the late 19th century to serve Manchester’s growing needs. Surrounded by fells such as Raven Crag and Armboth Fell, it provides commanding views of Helvellyn and the central Lake District. The subject has long drawn artists, poets, and travellers, situating Thompson’s work within a distinguished tradition of celebrating this landscape. Frame:- The painting is presented in a newly fitted Larson Julh gilt frame with floral foliage moulding. It is mounted to conservation standard and glazed with AR70 museum-quality anti-reflective glass. A hanging thread is fitted to the reverse, making the piece ready to display. Provenance:- Private collection Gray & Sons LTD, Carlisle Acquired through a northern auction house Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Key Features:- Original signed watercolour by a listed British artist Lake District subject of historical and cultural importance Professionally framed and ready to hang Collectible piece with strong provenance Suitable for home, office, or gallery display Availability:- Offered for immediate purchase.
