Description
Fine Quality Early Victorian Period Mahogany Library or desk Armchair, c.1840 Newly upholstered in finely buttoned burgundy leather which has been subtly patinated and aged, this fine chair is an example of early Victorian library furniture, designed for maximum comfort and providing a fine decorative accent to any interior. The show frame design means that fine mahogany is visible all the way around the chair, framing the leather upholstery both literally and metaphorically. The scrolling armrests are matched by incurved scrolls where they meet the front seat rail, and there are applied carved rosettes on the front blocks and this point flanking a reeded apron. The front legs have lotus flower form carving and retain their original brass castors. The chair has been provided with a squab cushion, also upholstered in leather, for further comfort. The chair has a high back and closed arms making it particularly useful in the winter, keeping away any draughts. This would certainly have been a factor in even the grandest houses when the piece was made. This is a fine and attractive example of a bergere with clean lines and excellent design.
