Description
French Rococo Revival Oak and Gilt Gesso Wall Mirror, Circa 1870–1890
A highly decorative late 19th-century French Rococo / Louis XV Revival wall mirror, framed in solid oak and enriched with applied gilt gesso ornament. The serpentine frame is crisply shaped, with flowing Rococo curves and scrolling foliate cartouches to the corners and mid-points. The gilt detailing retains its original late-19th-century finish, with areas of natural wear revealing the underlying gesso and bole, giving the whole a wonderfully authentic period character.
The original silvered mirror plate remains in place, displaying attractive age-speckling consistent with 19th-century glass. The contrast between the mellow, figured oak and the softly worn gilding makes this a particularly appealing decorative mirror, suitable for hallways, bedrooms, sitting rooms, or above a console or chimney piece.
measurements
Frame: 84 cm × 69.5 cm (33 1/8 in × 27 3/8 in), Visible mirror plate: 58.25 cm × 43.5 cm (22 7/8 in × 17 1/8 in)
declaration
Leeds Antiques has clarified that the French Rococo Revival Oak and Gilt Gesso Wall Mirror, Circa 1870–1890, Late 19th Century Louis XV Revival (LA555101) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Circa 1870
condition
A decorative antique mirror in good, presentable condition, consistent with its age.
The solid oak frame is structurally sound. The gilt gesso ornament shows expected rubbing, minor flaking, and small losses, revealing areas of the original white gesso ground and bole beneath. The mirror plate is period and original, with light, even speckling.
The rear softwood backing boards are 19th-century, showing some old worm holes (treated as a precaution). The modern high-quality paper tape securing the boards is fully reversible and simply ensures stability.
Clean, ready to hang, and full of charm.
