Description
A fine mid-18th century mahogany tripod tilt-top table, dating to approximately 1750-1770. The circular top is formed with a gently dished surface and moulded edge, displaying attractive figuring and a deep, warm colour. It is supported on a finely turned vase-shaped pedestal, raised on three elegant cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The table has a particularly pleasing scale and silhouette, characteristic of English tripod furniture of the George II and early George III period. There is good evidence of age throughout, including wear, old splits and historic repairs around the tripod joint. The tilt mechanism has been replaced at some point, with evidence of an earlier fitting visible beneath the top. These alterations are consistent with the long working life of the piece and do not detract from its overall appearance. A very attractive and versatile table, equally suited as a side table, lamp table or occasional table. Period: George II / Early George III Circa: 1750-1770 Material: Mahogany Origin: England
