Description
A fine Georgian period green wine glass dating to c1830.
It has a round funnel bowl, raised on a substantial six-sided, wide flute-cut stem leading down to a baluster basal knop. Supported by a conical foot with a polished pontil.
A particularly well-crafted glass with a satisfying weight and balance, the substantial cut stem and baluster knop giving it a wonderful feel in the hand.
Historical Context:
By the early 19th century, coloured wine glasses had become an established feature of the fashionable table, with rich greens being particularly effective when combined with the heavier cut and moulded forms of the Regency period.
Unlike the more delicate stems of many earlier Georgian wines, the substantial flute-cut stem and baluster knop of this example give the glass a strong architectural quality.
