More readily known as tear bottles, tear catchers, tear vials, unguentaria, or unguentarium and allegedly, used to catch the tears of mourners and kept in memory of loved one's post-mortem. Reputedly once the collected tears had evaporated from the bottle, it signified that the mourning period was over. Widely observed as being used as scent bottles.
