19th century glass lachrymatory bottle of cut clear glass with gilt overlay decoration,
However, it seems many terms were “invented” in the 19th century, analogous with unguentarius (perfume seller) and similar Latin words that the Romans used in connection with perfumes.
More readily known as tear bottles, tear catchers, tear vials, unguentaria, or unguentarium and allegedly, used to catch the tears of mourners and kept in memory of loved one's post-mortem.
Reputedly once the collected tears had evaporated from the bottle, it signified that the mourning period was over.
Widely observed as being used as scent bottles.
