Description
A fine Georgian turquoise blue wine glass dating to c1790. It has a well-proportioned tulip bowl, raised on a plain stem and supported by a conical foot with snapped pontil.
A particularly attractive glass, the rich turquoise blue giving what is otherwise a restrained and elegant Georgian form considerable presence.
Historical Context:
Coloured drinking glasses became increasingly fashionable during the late Georgian and Regency periods, with strong jewel-like colours providing a striking contrast to conventional clear table glass.
Turquoise blue is particularly distinctive, combining the depth of the darker blue glasses of the period with a brighter blue-green tone. The simple form of this example allows the colour itself to provide the decoration, very much in keeping with the Regency taste for strong but controlled colour.
