Description
A Napoleon I Gilt Metal Portrait Roundel after a design by Bertrand Andrieu (1761–1822)
A finely executed 19th-century gilt metal portrait roundel depicting Napoleon Bonaparte in classical profile, facing dexter and crowned with a laurel wreath—an enduring symbol of imperial authority and victory drawn from the visual language of ancient Rome.
Rendered in low relief with elegant restraint, the composition reflects the neoclassical ideals that defined the Napoleonic era and its artistic legacy. The portrait is based on designs associated with Bertrand Andrieu, one of the foremost medallists of the Empire, whose work helped shape the official image of Napoleon across coinage and commemorative medals.
This example, produced later in the 19th century, forms part of the wider European “Cult of Napoleon”—a period during which his image was revived, collected, and displayed as both a symbol of power and a subject of historical fascination. Intended for decorative display, the roundel is mounted within a simple turned frame, enhancing its presence as an object of both historical and aesthetic interest.
The surface retains a warm, mellow gilt tone, with gentle wear commensurate with age, contributing to its authenticity and visual depth. The modelling remains clear and well-defined, particularly in the delineation of the laurel wreath and facial profile.
