Description
An evocative and wonderfully characterful mid-20th-century oil portrait of a young serviceman in military uniform, dated 1948, shortly after the end of the Second World War. This engaging portrait depicts a young soldier wearing a dark olive-green military tunic, shirt and tie, his neatly combed dark hair and thoughtful, slightly distant expression beautifully capturing the character and individuality of the sitter. It is of particular interest is the partially legible red lettering painted onto the soldier's left shoulder, which appears to begin with the word **"ROYAL"**, suggesting a possible connection with one of the British Army's Royal regiments or corps. Although the precise regiment has yet to be identified, this intriguing detail adds considerable historical interest to the portrait and offers a possible avenue for further research. The artist has employed a restrained palette of muted olive greens, earthy browns and soft flesh tones, with particular attention given to the sitter's expressive eyes, carefully modelled features and youthful appearance. The work has a distinctive, almost naïve quality, with confident but uncomplicated brushwork and a simplicity of composition that gives the painting an appealing sense of honesty and immediacy. The painting is executed in oils on card and bears an indistinct signature or inscription towards the lower right, together with an apparent date of '48. The work retains its original, unrestored appearance, with visible wear, abrasions and losses around the edges and corners of the card. These signs of age contribute to its authentic period character. A particularly appealing piece of military portraiture, combining artistic charm with an intriguing historical backstory. An interesting addition to a collection of British military memorabilia, Second World War portraiture or mid-20th-century figurative art. Presentation: Unframed.
