Victorian Amethyst & Pearl Necklace by Hamilton & Co – 15ct Gold, c.1890 with Original Box This exceptional Victorian necklace is a fine example of 19th-century craftsmanship by the renowned British jewellers Hamilton & Co. Beautifully crafted in rich 15ct yellow gold, it features a stunning pear-shaped amethyst drop framed by foliate detailing and adorned with luminous split pearls. Above the drop is a round-cut amethyst and a line of graduated pearls, all suspended from an integral 15ct gold trace link chain, fastened with a modern lobster clasp for security. The pendant is marked 15ct gold on the reverse, and the necklace is presented in its original tooled leather case with cream silk lining, finely marked: Hamilton & Co Ltd, Jeweller to HM the King Emperor. Founded in 1808 in Calcutta, Hamilton & Co rose to prominence as one of the most prestigious jewellers of the British Empire, supplying royalty, aristocracy, and colonial officials. This necklace, dating to circa 1890, reflects their refined aesthetic and exceptional quality. Three years later, Robert Hamilton was the first English silversmith to open a shop in Old Court House street where the business remained until its closure in 1973. Henry and James Glazbrook joined the business in 1811 and new branches were opened in Bombay, Delhi and Shimla. The business quickly grew and the best artisans of the country were employed in its big workshop. The brand’s polished silverware, with elegant lines and delicate decorations appealed the members of the British government as well as the Indian aristocracy. Soon the firm became a proper statement among European royalties, no less considered than Tiffany or Cartier. In 1817 Robert Hamilton lost interest in the company but the business carried on thanks to new partnerships. After the independence of India in 1947 the business survived 26 years more, and it definitely closed in 1973.
