Description
Offered for sale is a copy of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Gothic Novel House of the seven gables first published in 1851. The work, set in mid-19th-century Salem, Massachusetts is a sombre study in hereditary sin, based on the legend of a curse pronounced on Hawthorne’s own family by a woman condemned to death during the infamous Salem witch trials. The greed and arrogance of the novel’s Pyncheon family through the generations are mirrored in the gloomy decay of their seven-gabled mansion, in which the family’s enfeebled and impoverished relations live. At the book’s end the descendant of a family long ago defrauded by the Pyncheon's lifts his ancestors’ curse on the mansion and marries a young niece of the family. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4th 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, U.S. He died on: May 19th 1864 in Plymouth, New Hampshire aged 59. Nathaniel was an American novelist and short-story writer who was a master of the allegorical and symbolic tale. Considered to be one of the greatest fiction writers in American literature, he is best known for The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of the Seven Gables (1851). The House of the Seven Gables is the home of an important family the Pyncheon's. They have the house and a lot of land, but no money and many problems. Is there a curse on the family? This is a story about money, murder, and love. This version was published early 20th century by Collins clear type press, London & Glasgow. Beautifully bound in burgundy coloured soft leather binding with gilt lettered spine including a facsimile of the authors signature on the front with a burnished top edge it is Illustrated throughout by A. A. Dixon.
