Description
A powerful and historically significant bronze sculpture by James Butler, depicting St Peter and St Paul seated side by side, rendered with Butler’s unmistakable sense of monumentality, narrative depth, and expressive surface modelling. The figures are shown holding their traditional attributes — St Peter with the keys and St Paul with the sword — symbolising authority, faith, and martyrdom. This work forms part of a limited edition cast for York Minster, produced following the devastating fire of 1984. Butler was commissioned to design and install a monumental version of this composition as a roof boss for the Lantern Tower, which was completed and installed in 1988 as part of the Minster’s restoration programme. The present sculpture represents an important sculptural reduction of that major ecclesiastical commission. Cast in bronze with a rich, naturally aged patina, the sculpture displays exceptional detail throughout — from the deeply carved drapery and expressive facial features to the architectural church model held between the saints. The weight, scale, and sculptural presence give the work a strong architectural quality, making it equally suited to display indoors as a statement piece or within a contemplative setting. A rare opportunity to acquire a substantial bronze by one of Britain’s foremost post-war sculptors, directly linked to one of the most important cathedral restoration projects of the late 20th century. A work of both artistic and historical importance, combining religious symbolism, craftsmanship, and provenance.
