Late Georgian Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase c.1800

A handsome and substantial late Georgian mahogany secretaire bookcase, dating to approximately circa 1800. This impressive two-part piece combines a glazed bookcase, fitted writing desk and generous drawer storage, making it both highly decorative and practical. The upper section features a pair of glazed doors with elegant Gothic astragal glazing, with pointed intersecting arches typical of English furniture from the late Georgian period. The glazed section retains a working lock and provides useful storage for books or display pieces. Below, the secretaire drawer opens to form a writing surface and reveals a traditional fitted interior with pigeonholes and a central bank of small drawers. The writing area has been fitted with new felt. The lower section provides further full-width drawers for additional storage. The construction shows a number of strong period features, including fine hand-cut dovetails, visible hand-saw overcuts and solid oak drawer linings, all consistent with high-quality English cabinetmaking from around 1800. The mahogany has a rich, warm colour with attractive figuring and a naturally aged patina. For ease of transport and access, the Secretaire Bookcase separates into two sections: the upper glazed bookcase and the lower secretaire base.
