Description
A Late Regency / William IV plum pudding mahogany fold-over tea table, circa 1825–1835. A particularly good early 19th century mahogany fold-over tea table, the top veneered in richly figured plum pudding mahogany, with rounded front corners and a deep moulded frieze. The top opens to reveal its original polished mahogany interior, retaining a wonderfully rich, deep colour and a largely untouched period surface. Unlike a baize-lined card table, this example was made with a polished mahogany interior, indicating its original use as a tea table or occasional entertaining table. The table is raised on a faceted pedestal column above a shaped quatreform platform base, with carved gadrooned decoration to the collar and especially well-carved scrolling paw feet. The feet are of excellent quality, with strong definition and finely detailed carving, and retain their original concealed castors. This is a very good survivor piece, retaining a high degree of originality, excellent colour and a pleasing untouched character throughout. The form is typical of the late Regency and early William IV period, but the originality, condition, rich interior surface and quality of the carved base make this a particularly appealing example. It would work beautifully as a tea table, side table, occasional table or decorative hall piece.

condition
Very good original condition. The table is structurally sound, with no loose joints, and the fold-over action works correctly. It appears to be completely original, with no repairs noted, and retains its original hidden castors. The outer top has a lovely original surface with attractive age, colour and patina, showing only minor old marks and scratches consistent with age and use. There are a couple of small veneer losses, all well polished in and not detracting from the overall appearance. The original polished mahogany interior is especially pleasing, retaining a rich, deep colour and a largely untouched surface, suggesting the table has seen relatively light use over its lifetime. Overall, a very honest and well-preserved survivor piece, with excellent character and particularly fine carved feet.
