Description
Longcase clock by James Wilson, Westminster, London. This 18th Century clock has all the qualities of a great maker: eight day movement, brass cased weights, exceptional pulleys, a beautiful silvered dial, and the function to turn the strike on and off. In good working order and on later feet.
James Wilson is recorded as working in Westminster during the late 18th century, and was a member of the Clockmakers Company from 1771-1824.
Provenance:- This clock belonged to a Wwii veteran, a Tank Commander and volunteer for Special Operations with the 6th Airborne Division, who landed behind enemy lines as part of the D Day landings, Normandy Operation Overlord. Badly wounded in action when a shell exploded near his Tetrach Light Tank, he recovered from his injuries and pledged that at the end of the war he would return to marry one of the nurses who cared for him with skill and compassion during his darkest days. A truly remarkable gentleman and story. Lest we forget. The painting depicts his 100th Birthday and love for this clock, which had been in his family for three generations (painting not included in this sale).
