Description
A fine oil on artist board depicting rough seas on the coast by Bernard Benedict Hemy (1855-1913). This is a fine example Hemy’s work who was brilliant at capturing the nature of the sea and the North East of England. Bernard Benedict Hemy was born in Australia where his family had emigrated in 1852 and was a member of the Hemy family of marine artists. He actually spent the majority of his life in North Shields emigrating from Australia at a young age. It is likely that he studied art at the Newcastle Art School, he was not widely travelled preferring a simple life on the North East Coast. Throughout his career he displayed a strong competence at creating realistic portrayals of every day marine activity, skilfully documenting coastal and harbour views as well as local fishing scenes of the period. Paintings by Bernard Benedict Hemy are considered the rarest of the Hemy family. He exhibited at the Suffolk Street Gallery in London in both 1875 and 1877 and was a participant in various other English exhibitions. This example of his work is in excellent condition; it is fully signed ‘B.B.Hemy’ to the lower left and retains the original simple gilt frame and mount. A fine example of marine painting that is ready to hang. C.1890.
