Description
This is a lovely view of Cliveden House, Berkshire, from the extravagant fountain called "The Fountain of Love". Commissioned by Lord Astor in 1897, it is a two coloured marble sculpture by Thomas Waldo Story, perhaps the central feature of the impressive gardens. Cliveden is of course famous for being the home of Lady Nancy Astor, the first female member of Parliament. Michael Vicary is a contemporary professional artist of over 30 years. He grew up in Maidenhead and studied art in Bristol. Many of his paintings are of the Thames around Windsor. His style is bold with strong colours. In this piece, his perspective gives a sense of the huge size of this sculpture and the two colours in the marble are very evident. Signed lower right (to the left of the blue patch of water- it's difficult to see).
