Murano Sommerso Blue & Ruby Glass Bowl – Attributed to Flavio Poli

A striking mid-century Italian Murano sommerso art glass bowl, attributed to Flavio Poli, circa 1960s. A beautifully formed small art glass bowl displaying a particularly dramatic combination of rich ruby-red glass encased within deep blue and clear glass. The piece has a substantial sculptural form with a thick rounded body and opposing pulled sections to the rim. Viewed from above, the layers of coloured glass create a particularly attractive effect, with the intense red centre surrounded by darker tones before graduating into brilliant blue around the outer edge. The use of contrasting layers of colour is characteristic of the sommerso technique for which Murano glass became internationally celebrated during the post-war period. The bowl is attributed to Flavio Poli, one of the most important figures in 20th-century Italian glass design and particularly associated with sophisticated sommerso colour combinations. Despite its relatively compact dimensions, the considerable thickness and depth of colour give the bowl excellent visual presence. It would make an attractive addition to a collection of Murano, Italian art glass or Mid-Century Modern design.
