Description
Antique Equestrian oil painting on canvas - “The Mint” Thoroughbred Stallion, 1912 by T. B. Whitby – In the Manner of Munnings. This distinguished early 20th-century equestrian portrait, painted in 1912 by Timothy B. Whitby, is executed in the manner of Sir Alfred Munnings (1878–1959), the most celebrated British equestrian artist of the 20th century. Whitby’s confident brushwork, sensitive use of colour, and strong composition capture not only the form of the Thoroughbred but also its nobility, character, and presence. Subject & Medium:- The painting depicts “The Mint”, a chestnut Thoroughbred stallion and sire, shown in full profile facing left. His muscular conformation, arched neck, and attentive head are complemented by a rustic brick wall, a simple water trough, and scattered straw, creating a stable scene that feels both authentic and atmospheric. Dated August 1912 Signed lower corner T. B. Whitby Original gilt frame, enhancing the warmth of the palette and period character. Composition & Technique:- Whitby balances realism with painterly vitality in a style closely aligned with Munnings: Colour: Rich chestnut tones of sienna, russet, and ochre are highlighted with ivory accents, while earthy reds and golden straw create a harmonious backdrop. Brushstrokes: Fine, directional strokes define the sheen of the stallion’s coat, contrasted by looser, impressionistic marks in the straw and brickwork. Style: Executed in the manner of Munnings, the painting transforms a stable portrait into a study of equine dignity and atmosphere. The Artist – Timothy B. Whitby Active in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Whitby specialised in equine and animal painting. His work combines accurate observation with an impressionistic sensitivity to light and tone, placing him firmly within the British sporting art tradition. Though not directly linked to Munnings, this portrait demonstrates a strong stylistic affinity. Whitby’s works have appeared at auction, including Christie’s. The Horse – The Mint and the “Mint” Heritage Provenance records The Mint as a Thoroughbred stallion and sire. While not widely noted in racing archives, his name evokes a celebrated bloodline: Minting (1883–1909) – Grand Prix de Paris and Hardwicke Stakes winner, influential stallion Maid of the Mint – Minting’s daughter and dam of Spearmint (1903), Derby and Grand Prix de Paris winner By 1912, the “Mint” name carried prestige in British racing, making it likely that The Mint was named in homage to this renowned lineage. Provenance:- Private Lancashire stud collection Shire auction label verso Now in the collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Why You’ll Love It:- A commanding statement piece for a study, library, or drawing room. Rich in history, tied to the prestigious Minting–Spearmint Thoroughbred lineage. Signed and dated by Timothy B. Whitby, executed in the manner of Sir Alfred Munnings. Decorative and authentic, with gilt frame and ready-to-hang presentation Collectible, uniting fine art, equestrian heritage, and British sporting tradition.
