A Fine Work of Art Equine Oil Painting Sporting Horse Race Jockey Lester Piggott No 3 On Nijinsky 1970 Derby. Subject sporting portrait of the known race horse Nijinsky being ridden by Lester Piggott winner of the 1970 Derby in side profile facing left. Lester is seated holding Nijinsky reigns, the number 3 can be seen on the horse. Oil on canvas. Signed by the known British artist William Norman Gaunt. Artist biography. William Norman Gaunt (British 1918 - 2001) was born in Leeds In 1918 and studied at Lancaster School of Art under Walter Bayes R.W.S.. He gained his National Diploma in 1949 and was made a Fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in 1959. His work is well renowned for his characterful depictions of figures, coastal scenes and equestrian portraits. Lester Keith Piggott (5 November 1935 – 29 May 2022) was an English professional jockey and trainer. With 4,493 career flat racing wins in Britain, including a record nine Epsom Derby victories, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest flat racing jockeys of all time and the originator of a much imitated style. Popularly called "The Long Fellow", he was known for his competitive personality, restricting his weight and, on occasion, not sparing the whip, such as in the 1972 Derby. Nijinsky (21 February 1967 – 15 April 1992) was a Canadian-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was the outstanding two-year-old in Europe in 1969 when he was unbeaten in five races. In the following season he became the first horse for thirty-five years to win the English Triple Crown. He is regarded by many experts to have been the greatest flat racehorse in Europe during the 20th century Nijinisky was owned by Charles W. Engelhard and trained at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary by the legendary Vincent O’Brien, Nijinsky was an outstanding racehorse and the winner of the Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and St. Leger) in 1970. He was bred by Windfields Farm in Canada and was by the great Northern Dancer out of Flaming Page by Bull Page. He stood his entire career at Claiborne Farm, Kentucky, becoming a champion sire in the USA and Europe. Ridden here by the great late Lester Piggott.
