A beautiful oil on canvas laid to board, portrait by the artist George Henry Evison. The work is a very intimate portrait in the French manner and captured brilliantly with a soft use of colour and confident brushwork. The painting is in excellent condition and signed to the lower right.
George Henry Evison is primarily remembered as book illustrator. He was born and trained in Liverpool at the school of art, and after moving to London at the Slade School. His works can be seen in many books but he did also exhibit at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and at the Royal Academy. This is an unusual work for the artist and I think may have been something he produced whilst studying at the Slade School.
The painting is framed in a very good quality modern bespoke frame, coloured beautifully to work with the piece. The whole has a great bright, fresh, playful look and is ready to hang. C.1900.
