Description
The most charming portrait of a little girl in a white dress and blue ribbon in her hair (One Miss Coole). This is painted with such sensitivity and empathy by the artist, creating a real emotional connection between the viewer and the sitter.
Portraits by Anna Richards Brewster are particularly uncommon, with many works being landscapes/cityscapes of Europe and North Africa where she travelled. This was perhaps commissioned by a family friend or connection of the artist, although this is, of course, conjecture. We are very much put in the mind of a wee girl in her nightdress getting ready to say her prayers before off to bed.
This portrait was painted in 1901 after Anna had completed her formal training in both Boston and New York and had settled in London, England. Being painted prior to Anna marrying (which she did in 1905) this is signed for Anna Richards.
The portrait is framed in its original Arts and Crafts style Oak Frame and sat behind glass. The frame is decorated with pretty gilt decoration, which is intact but delicate with age. The orginal label can be seen verso with the description and a later print out of the artstis biography.
A most delightful and rare piece of American art history by a trailblazing female impressionist, who forged her own path in the male dominated art world of the early 20th Century.
