Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Ian Black studied at Southampton College of Art, 1949, and Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, 1952–6, teachers including Peter Potworowski, Peter Lanyon, William Scott and Martin Froy. Among mixed exhibitions were RWA of which he was a member, and the Royal Academy. He also had a series of solo shows throughout the UK. Wadham and St Catherine’s Colleges in Oxford as well as the New Zealand government hold his work. In 1995 he had a series of exhibitions in London, including one at the Bruton St. Gallery. Became head of art at Bristol Cathedral School. Lived at Englishcombe, Bath, Somerset. He was an experimental artist and his understanding of ‘Rhythms of the land’ was central to his paintings. His themes were landscape and the coast using interlocking shapes of escarpments headlands and seashore to produce highly evocative images.
