Description
David Deuchar was a seal engraver and etcher from Edinburgh. He and his brother Alexander Deuchar were appointed Seal-Engravers to the Prince of Wales ca.1786.
He gave drawing lessons to Henry Raeburn, whom he also introduced to David Martin, the portrait painter.
Deuchar's most famous publications are:
'A Collection of Etchings after the Most Eminent Masters of the Dutch and Flemish Schools' and his series of etchings after Holbein's 'Dance of Death'.
Deuchar’s works can now be found in the collection of the Royal Academy, the National Gallery of Art, V&A. and the Met.
The etching has been trimmed to the plate mark which was the norm before the 20th Century.
There are some historic small areas of broken paper which are visible in the photographs that do not detract from the etched image. A fine and rare image with great detail and skilled workmanship.
Provenance; With Trevor Stevenson 1899-1985. Son of Bernard Stevenson, curator of Newcastle art gallery, Trevor was an amature painter and major collector of Old Master etchings. Purchased directly from him.
