One of Britain's foremost potters of the 20/21 century. In the late 20th C. he started to produce sculptural abstract paintings often reflecting his admiration for Rothko. These were mainly painted on card on a small scale. These were prized by people who bought them. Robin Welch, born 1936, studied at Penzance School of Art and the Central School of Art, London. He worked part-time at the Leach Pottery between 1953 and 1959 before opening his own pottery in London's west end, which ran from 1960 to 1962. After a couple of years of world travel, he returned to England and in 1965 set up Stadbroke Pottery in Eye, Suffolk. I first met Robin in the late 1980's at his pottery in Stradbroke. He was not a tall man but strong as an ox from lifting clay and huge pots. Stuck into a beam high in the Pottery was his old Commando knife, a relic of his parachuting into Suez in 1956. Amazing guy. Frame size; 26 cm. x 21 cm. Image size; 17 cm. x 13 cm.
