Description
Size: Sheet 46 x 59 cm, print to platemark 34.5 x 28 cm Condition: Excellent condition, full sheet not trimmed. Unframed. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original print of a soft ground etching and aquatint by Thomas Gainsborough. This print was published in 1971 by the John Boydell Press, under the direction of Iain Bain. It is only the second printing form the copper plate, the first having been made in 1797 by J & J Boydell. The print shows a landscape with cattle, a drover following them, with a knarled dead tree in the foreground and a lightly wooded landscape beyond. The plate bears the original lettering from the 1797 production. Eleven of Gainsborough's original copper plates survived, and the edition of 75 copies from each plate was made from these. The decision to make the additional set of prints was based upon the scarcity of the existing prints. After this, the plates were acquired by the Tate Gallery, and no further impressions will be taken of them. The prints were made by Philip McQueen, whose family of printmakers had owned the pates since the mid 19th century. It is on hand-made rag paper by J Barcham Green of Maidstone, and bears a dated watermark in the centre of the printed area. This copy has the full margins. Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. He is credited as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school, and was a founding member of the Royal Academy. Although he first trained as an engraver under Hubert Gravelot in London, his output as a printmaker was limited - only 22 works are known. In this print the effects of soft ground etching capture the effect of his painted landscapes, which Constable commented were "things he painted with an exquisite refinement, yet not a refinement beyond nature." The only opportunity to acquire an original Thomas Gainsborough work for an affordable price!
