Description
A fine quality work by this internationally acclaimed Polish/British artist painted during his professorship at Corsham School of art. The painting comes with a catalogue of the last highly successful exhibition of Peter Potworowski's work in Warsaw in 2024. Tadeusz Piotr Potworowski was born in Warsaw and studied art in Warsaw and Krakow where he studied under Joseph Pankiewicz. It was Pankiewicz who incorporated Peter into the Paris Commune, or Kapists, a group of Polish artists who travelled to the French capital in 1924. There he had a flat in Montparnasse and enrolled in Fernand Leger's studio as a member of the Kapist group, working with Pierre Bonnard, Leger and Picasso. He returned to Poland 1930 and after the German occupation he escaped in 1940 to Sweden via Lithuania and in 1943 made his way to Britain, eventually settling in London after war service in Scotland. In 1946 he had a show at The Redfern Gallery in January 1946 and was to exhibit regularly with Gimpel Fils, and the London Group to which he was elected a member in 1949. During this period he met Clifford Ellis, who had recently been appointed head of Corsham (Bath Academy) school of art. Ellis was looking for a teacher who would bring 'a foreign flavour' and Peter was the perfect match. He was professor of painting at the Bath from 1949-1957 influencing all those who came in contact with him, including Terry Frost, Adrian Heath, Peter Lanyon and Kenneth Armitage. During the 1950s he painted frequently in Europe including France, Spain and Italy filling many sketch books. In 1958 he was invited to return to Poland where he became Professor of Painting. In 1960 he represented Poland at the Venice Biennale winning an award. He died in Poland in 1962. Recent exhibitions include; A West Country exile' Chippenham Museum Sept 2023. 'The silence of colour' Galeria aTAK. August 2024. 'St Ives and Elsewhere' British Council exhibition in Lodz. March 2025. Provenance; The estate of Doreen Heaton Potworowski.
